Dr. James Cleland

BHB, MBChB, FRACP

James is a New Zealander who completed primary medical qualification in 1995. He traveled to the US in 1998 where he completed his advanced specialist training in 2002 at the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY.

After completing further fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular disease at the same institution, he was admitted to the faculty of Neurology at the University of Rochester as Assistant Professor in 2004.

He has been in independent practice since that time as a General Adult Neurologist with subspecialty interest in neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine, with American Board certification in Neurology and also in Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He returned to New Zealand in late 2006 and has been employed as a Specialist Neurologist - at Waikato Hospital from 2006 until 2010, Auckland from 2010-2018, and now at Tauranga Hospital.

James is a reviewer for the peer-reviewed journal, Muscle and Nerve, the main research publication for electrodiagnostic medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, sits on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Neurologic Foundation of NZ, is a member of the PHARMAC Rare Diseases Subcommittee, and is Honorary Medical Adviser to the MND association of NZ.
